perdió 1-0 ante en el Etihad Stadium y le alcanzó para acceder a la final de la Copa de la Liga de Inglaterra tras superar a los Red Devils por un marcador global de 3-2.

Manchester City defenderá su título de campeón de la Copa de la Liga el 1 de marzo en Wembley contra el Aston Villa. Los ‘Citizens’ tenían la eliminatoria ante sus vecinos encarrilada después de haber ganado 3 a 1 en la ida en Old Trafford, un resultado que les permitió el pase a pesar de la derrota de la vuelta.

El único gol del partido lo firmó para los ‘Red Devils’ el serbio Nemanja Matic (minuto 35), que aprovechó un rechace en el área para, con un potente disparo ajustado a la base del palo, batir al arquero chileno Claudio Bravo. Matic fue luego expulsado en el 76 por una segunda tarjeta amarilla.

Será la cuarta presencia del Manchester City en las cinco últimas finales de la ‘EFL Cup’, un torneo donde ha levantado el trofeo en seis ocasiones, incluyendo las dos últimas, en 2018 y 2019.

Este torneo adquiere un mayor valor para el City en un momento en el que afronta la recta final de la temporada, a 19 puntos del líder Liverpool en la Premier League, donde el equipo de Josep Guardiola tiene muy complicado poder revalidar el título. Por eso los torneos de eliminación directa se presentan como la tabla de salvación de la temporada del City.

Además de para la final de esta Copa de la Liga, el Manchester City está clasificado para octavos de final en la Liga de Campeones, donde se medirá al Real Madrid, y para octavos en la Copa de Inglaterra, donde tendrá como adversario al Sheffield Wednesday (2ª división).
